Small Animal Patients

Veterinarians use general anesthesia for procedures that may be painful or require patients to lie perfectly still. At Arroyo, such instances include spaying or neutering, exploratory surgery, orthopedic procedures, tumor removal, dental cleaning, and dental extractions. We follow very strict standards to ensure your pet’s well-being throughout the anesthesia and post-operative healing period. We begin with a pre-operative blood test and physical exam to make sure your pet is able to tolerate the anesthesia and surgery. To administer fluids and medication, we place an intravenous catheter in a leg vein. We administer a dose of pain medication, and then insert a tracheal tube to aid breathing and to administer anesthetic gas. During surgery, a nurse monitors your pet’s vital signs and body temperature. In our recovery area, we closely observe the patient and administer any required post-operative pain medication until he or she is alert and able to walk.

Exams & Preventative Care

Proper dental care is critical for ensuring the overall health and helping to prolong the life of your dog or cat. In fact, 85 to 95 percent   of all pets age three and older have significant dental and periodontal disease, which not only is painful and but also can lead to life-threatening infections. Arroyo’s dental programs adhere to the highest medical standards.

Surgery

Because animals can’t tell us how they feel, diagnostic tests give us valuable insight into the health and comfort of your dog or cat.  We often recommend them during annual or semi-annual exams. The tests we offer include blood panels, x-rays, urinalyses, electrocardiograms (EKGs), ultrasounds, fecal exams, heartworm checks, glaucoma screens, and fine-needle aspirates or biopsies of lumps or bumps.

Avian Medicine & Surgery

If it becomes necessary for your dog or cat to stay in our hospital, you can count on your pet receiving a clean and comfortable    environment, an accurate diagnosis, pain relief and prevention, a daily doctor examination, prompt treatment, and regular attention and affection.
